How Your Office Can Help Attract and Retain Gen Y Employees
- Steve Beck, Principal COBE Development

"This is the most high-maintenance workforce in the history of the world, the good news is they're also going to be the most high-performing workforce in the history of the world. They walk in with more information in their heads, more information at their fingertips - and, sure, they have high expectations, but they have the highest expectations first and foremost for themselves." - Bruce Tulgan, founder of RainmakerThinking.

Generation Y is comprised of nearly 80 million members born between 1977 and 1995, making it the largest generation in the history of the world. “The Baby Boomers and Generation X have long been known as generations who live to work. But Generation Y doesn’t operate on that same principle. Gen Yers want to work to live, not live to work” says Jennifer Blanchard of hrtools.com. This principle is defined by the term “work-life balance,” or the ability to be more flexible, expecting, and desiring less regularity out of their work day.

According to Katherine Lockett, author of “Work-Life Balance for Dummies,” work-life balance is, “The need of all individuals to achieve and maintain a balance between paid work and life outside of work, the word ‘balance’ does not necessarily mean an even divide between work and life,” Lockett says. “Instead, balance means successfully managing all the responsibilities an individual has in both areas of their lives.” Therefore, smart employers will be offering Gen Y employees more flexible environments to work within.

At COBE we provide offices in locations that can help you attract and retain these important Gen Y employees. By owning an office that is close to home it allows employees the flexibility of short commutes, extended hours, community involvement, family/friend interaction, and the idea that they have some control over when and where they work. In addition, COBE plazas incorporate inside/outside connectivity and retail mixed use for more human interaction and less stressful workplace environments. Consequently, Gen Yers who are afforded these types of office arrangements are more productive, ambitious, and ultimately more loyal.
